Alternatives’ Whitin Mill Project Wins Blackstone Valley Chamber 2007 Cornerstone Award

Alternatives’ Whitin Mill Project has won a 2007 Cornerstone Award from the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce. The award is presented to Chamber members who have renovated existing structures to enhance the esthetic and economic values of the Valley. Alternatives' is being recognized for its "outstanding mill renovation."

The renovated 30,000-square-foot Whitin Mill features artisan space, a theater/training space, restaurant space and an art gallery. It also houses Alternatives’ administrative offices, an employment office and affordable housing for people served by Alternatives. All surround a riverside community plaza featuring a labyrinth. The entire complex is provided with heating/air conditioning and electricity through green, renewable energy.

In giving the award, Chamber board chairman Joseph Barbato praised Alternatives for its “continuing dedication to the community. This project” he said, “truly embraces the heritage of the Blackstone Valley’s past and is now a beacon of our very bright future.”

“Alternatives needs real community opportunities for the individuals we serve,” said Alternatives executive director Dennis Rice. “The restoration of the Whitin mill will provide those opportunities while contributing to the quality of life and economic development of the region. Alternatives is honored to receive the Cornerstone Award.”

Office, artisan and restaurant space is now being leased. Alternatives' Capital Campaign has raised more than $3.6 million to date with a goal of raising $4.2 million in support of the $9.2-million historic-renovation project. To help raise the additional monies, Alternatives is selling pavers, which can be etched with a name, quote or business name. The pavers will surround the labyrinth on the riverside community plaza and are priced from $250.
