A Coupla White Chicks enjoyed a long Off-Broadway run and featured a succession of noted actresses in the leads, including Eileen Brennan, Susan Sarandon, Dixie Carter, Louise Lasser, Jobeth Williams, and Dorothy Lyman. Pilgrim Soul’s upcoming production features local performers Betty Kristan and Bonnie Stockdale, directed by Matthew J. Carr.
The play tells the story of Maude Mix, an uptight Westchester housewife whose husband is currently on an extramarital jaunt with his secretary. From the moment Maude’s new next-door neighbor, a flamboyant Texas ex-cheerleader named Hannah Mae Bindler, invades Maude’s perfectly ordered kitchen, her super-programmed day is thrown into comical chaos. At first, Hannah Mae’s attempt to ingratiate herself with the private, no-nonsense Maude is a frantic, funny failure. But soon, crises in both their marriages bring them together. Under the onslaught of the bubbly, life-embracing Hannah Mae, Maude’s defensive façade crumbles. The growth of their friendship and love is engrossing, touching, and always uproariously hilarious.
Last spring at the Worcester Hibernian Cultural Centre, Pilgrim Soul Productions staged Brian Friel’s nostalgic comedy The Loves of Cass McGuire to critical acclaim and standing ovations. The theater company soon begins rehearsals in that venue for its November production of Jimmy Murphy’s The Muesli Belt, a tragicomic tale of modern Dublin.
Alternatives is a non-profit agency serving more than 550 adults with developmental and psychiatric disabilities in 45 programs throughout central Massachusetts. The Singh Performance Center is part of Alternatives’ recently renovated Whitin Mill complex.
