Gloria Whitmore, a restless New Yorker, finds herself with nothing to do when her husband takes a job in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western Virginia. She becomes a hospice volunteer and soon encounters Grace Stiles, a relentlessly independent woman who has spent all of her 90 years in the mountains and has outlived, not only her husband, but all five of her children.
